brisa y una
sudestada

A group of performers in a space bounded by spectators and running fans. A hot landscape in constant transformation, as if gusts of wind shifting direction were also acting upon the bodies. Performers and fans draw closer and drift apart in an endless mating dance of excited birds that spend hours in foreplay and only seconds in the act itself; they change partners and choreographies, cross glances and trajectories, tangle and untangle the threads that keep the wind blowing. Are the performers dancing for the fans or for us? Is this a peep show or a provincial ball? A commentary on the affective politics of Latin America or on global warming? Whatever it is, it’s spicy.

An old song by Rita Lee is heard, sung languorously with the mouth close to the spinning blades of a fan, distorting the voice into a metallic register. Bobby Brim’s inspired sound composition blends Latin rhythms and electronic beats, gradually heating the cauldron; we slowly sink into this sonic and kinetic soup that softens the flesh on the bones. Eventually, the performers gather into a band, a flock, a block that expands the delimited space, placing us—the spectators—inside the vibrating circle as well. The lights are replaced by flashing colored torches, clothes are gradually discarded, sweaty bodies slide within centimeters of the chairs where we sit, the rhythm reaches a peak that seems unsustainable and yet remains so for a long time—people like mill blades receiving masses of air to produce energy, heat, humidity, affection. Yes, Mariana Catalina Iris’s piece revolves around affects with the irresistible force of a climatic phenomenon, pulling us toward the center where everything dissolves into small, glittering fragments carried by the wind.
